summary |
Tow captive Northern White-faced Owls affected with abdominal distension were carried to the hospital. In the both cases, ascites accumulated in the hepatic peritoneal cavity by radiography and ultrasonography. They died at 12days and at 75days respectively after the removal of ascites by abdominocentesis and administration of hepatoprotetive and diuretic medicines.
Macroscopically, the liver of both two birds revealed discoloration, hardening, and nodular lesions in addition of accumulation of ascites in the hepatic peritoneal cavity. Histopathologically, a large amount of brown pigments were deposited in hepatocytes and Kupffer cells in the liver of the both birds. Brown pigments were confirmed as hemosiderin because its stained with positive for Berlin blue staining. In addition, size imbalance of the hepatic lobules, formation of pseudo bile duct(pseudobiliary formation) and fibrosis were observed in the nodified parts of the liver. From the above results, two captive Northern White-faced Owls were diagnosed as a suspected iron storage disease. There is no report about iron storage disease in owls (Strigidae) as far as the aythor knows. Therefore, this is the first report that indicates that Northern White-faced Owl is also a susceptible species of iron storage disease. If symptoms such as abdominal distension and ascites are observed in this species, it is necessary to suspect iron storage disease as a differential diagnosis. |
